The pages listed below provide some general information on phonological awareness,
that may help to clarify the place of phonological awareness in early literacy development.
Card games are always
a favourite with young children and MyGo is no exception.
For children who need that extra practice for their phonological
awareness skills (but you're running out of new ideas), MyGo helps
to put the fun back into therapy. It can be played with just about
any group, from two to six players. The cards are professionally
printed and brightly coloured, sure to appeal to any client group.
The game features four different suites each of which is a different phonological
task - rhyming, word segmenting, sound blending and sound identifying, and one
wild card suite which covers sound-symbol association (or intial sound word generation).
There are special cards for missing a go, reversing the go, having another go,
and picking up extra cards. Of course the players can't have their turn until
they do the activity on the card they want to play! We're confident you'll enjoy
this game, too!
This game is also great for those children in their pre-formal school years who
are ready for some extra literacy stimulation, to complement early writing activities.

Nursery
rhymes program
The program consists of lesson plans for ten popular nursery rhymes, with five
activities for each rhyme. Each activity covers an area of phonological awareness.
It is ideally suited for the preschool child, and can be run at a class level
or individually. It has been written such that a teacher or teacher aide can
easily go through the program with the child, and so offer useful school-based
support.
There are also pre- and post- program assessment tools, a specially designed
set of certificates for completing the program, a board game set in Nursery Rhyme
Land using the various phonemic skills developed in the program, and a set of
handouts for use
in training sessions with teachers, parents or program facilitators.
As a complete set of resources it allows speech pathologists to set the program
in place, and then monitor the progress of the program and the gains in learning
outcomes of the students identified as having difficulties in phonological awareness.
Alternatively, schools can use the program at class level in the early childhood
setting as a great complement to the preliteracy work already in place.

Nursery
rhymes for young children
This book has been written for parents. It goes through fifteen nursery rhymes
with accompanying activities for each one. It is clearly set out like an activity
workbook, with instructions written at the head of each page. Each nursery rhyme
has
a ‘cut-out’ page, so no photocopying is required.
It is a great complement to the Nursery rhymes program, as it features
ten new nursery rhymes and is ideal for home follow-up or for children placed
on a waiting list for therapy. Naturally it is also excellent for working individually
with children. The activities which focus on phonological processing skills,
are aimed at children aged 4 to 6 years.

Sounds of the century
Sounds of the Century is a program to develop phonemic awareness
skills in young children. It has been written specifically for working
at a whole class level, with the idea of rotating groups of children
through the various activities in the program. However, it is also
well suited for individual therapy as home practice as most of the
activities are presented in a game format. The phonological awareness
activities are presented in themes, which helps to contextualise
the activities and skills,
and make the learning more purposeful.
The program covers all the aspects of phonemic awareness:
- rhyming identifying and generating
- sound identification
- counting syllable
- word segmenting
- sound blending
- manipulating sounds - deletion and changing
Each lesson plan also has an extra two activities:
- cognitive activity such as memory , categorisation
- sound -symbol association
These can be used with children who also need some extension of their skills.
Each lesson plan comes with all resource materials that may be required for the
activities, and are presented as black line masters for use in the clinical setting
or home follow-up.
The themes currently covered include:
- Transport
- Food
- Clothes
- Under the Sea
- Animals
- People and occupations
- Places to go
- In the garden
- Toys are fun
- Musical instruments
Units can be purchased individually or as a program set.
