SURFING SOUNDS
A variety of resources are available as part of the Surfing Sounds series.
My First Dictionary
This first dictionary introduces a set of characters who
highlight the relationship between sounds and letters. There are four pages for each letter:
- the character page
- a page of pictures, words and sentences
- a blank page for children to draw their own pictures and practise tracing over the letter
- a page for a phonological awareness activity based on that sound.
My First Dictionary comes as a set of master pages (unbound) for easy photocopying, but also has a CD version.
Purchase of the dictionary allows the buyer to reproduce the dictionary for classes.
Cost = $130.00

Surfing Sounds Dictionary
This is an early learning alphabet dictionary, which focuses on letters, sounds and the letter-sound association.
Children are taken systematically and consistently through the early literacy concepts:
•The letter is .... "
•The sound is ...."
This is supported with additional strategies:
•- Hooks to remember the letter/sound.
•- Some of the ways to write the sound.
•- How the sound is made.
The Surfing Sounds Dictionary provides a consistent base for all students entering Year 1, as well as giving parents a clear model for talking about things like letters, sounds and words. Cost - Individual books $16.50
Class sets (of 25 or more) - $9.90 each
letter page
Surfing Sounds Manual
The Manual details the concepts and underlying philosophy
of the Dictionary. It can be used by the support teacher to
support
students with difficulties in spelling, reading and writing;
it can be used as a program for use by the teacher aide; and
it can be used by parents working with their children at home.
It is clearly and simply written.
The manual comes with a master pages set of the Dictionary, a Surfing Sounds Word Book, and a number of pages from the manual which can be used as charts or ready reference guides.
The master pages of the Dictionary can be photocopied for use at individual or support level only, not for whole class sets.
Cost = $88.00
Surfing Sounds - Word Book
This small book is a simple resource which follows the Surfing Sounds theme, but focuses on high frequency words.
The words are listed alphabetically, and refer to the same concepts reinforced throughout the series. It can be used to enhance
familiarity with the high frequency words and also encourages children to write in their own individual high frequency words.
Cost = $9.90
Surfing Sounds - letter cards
This is an alphabetical set of letter cards, 10 x10cms.
On the front is a large print of the letter (using a generic, computer generated font rather than
a specific State school font) and is celloglazed for added wear and tear. On the reverse side is the information contained in the
Dictionary for how the sound of each letter is made.
Cost = $9.90
Surfing Vowels
Surfing Vowels continues the strategies and philosophy of the Surfing Sounds Dictionary.
It reinforces a process for working through a vowel sound and suggests a few new strategies more pertinent to the more focused study and understanding of vowels. There are 20 vowel sounds covered in this resource, plus
a page for the schwa sound.
There are four parts to the resource:
- an in-depth introduction to the package, which covers the philosophical framework of all the Surfing Sounds resources
- a basic set of four pages for each vowel sound
- extra pages for individual vowel sounds
- extra pages and activities that have generic value for all vowels.
- a book of word lists, nonsense word lists, and vowel sound loaded sentences and stories.
The basic four pages include a similar double page layout as for the Surfing Sound Dictionary plus two pages for writing extra words and sentences.
As with all of the resources in this series, pages are clear and able to be photocopied as blackline masters. The resource works well for students in Years 2 and 3,
as well as for intervention with students who are experiencing difficulties acquiring basic literacy skills.
