General Language Resources

Story Box

Story Box is a fabulous new resource that supports narrative therapy. It provides the therapist or teacher with a set of materials which support a student's narrative skills in three ways.

1. It uses a 'box' theme to make story structure more concrete and explicit for children
2. The boxes can be used as 3D, visual and tactile prompts for narrative development
3. The language process works from establishing the story idea, adding the structure of beginning - middle - end, and demonstrates the type of language features required in a narrative.

The resource is made up of more than thirty sequencing picture sets which are provided as black line masters for easy photocopying. Simple daily living activities are represented, as well as a few sequences that are more creative - such as a treasure dive or a trip to the moon.

There is also a set cube nets which depict narrative structure, top level text structure, language features of a story and story questions that can be associated with each step of a story.

The materials are clearly presented, appealing and well suited to children from early childhood to upper primary school.

Narrative cards - WHO?

Narrative cards - WHO? is a great compliment to the Story Box program. A set of forty full colour cards, depicting various story characters, for use in narrative therapy. Characters range from children to adults and represent a multitude of possibilities.

Working with children who are struggling with the narrative, often the very first block is in tying to get an initial idea. These cards will offer children from 6 to 16 years of age a great range of possible story lines. Children are encouraged to consider a potential story character and work through a set of concept circles, starting from a concrete physical look at the character, moving gradually into the more abstract concepts of personality, strengths and weaknesses, interests and friendships, until a complete picture of the character has emerged.

Once the character has been fully set, the story ideas will flow. As part of the concept web process, the child will also have developed a great vocabulary set to rely on for his or her story.

Simple and effective to use.

Language checkers

A language game that covers general language tasks, based around themes. Checker boards have pictures of various objects based on several themes. A net for a dice is also provided for each theme board which shows different questions or language tasks. Children play the game by moving a counter diagonally across the board, one space at a time (as you would in a normal game of checkers) then throwing the dice. The child then answers the question based on the picture they have moved on to.

Twelve game boards are presented in A3 format, in a folder which can be used while playing the game. A4 copies of the game are also provided for home follow-up support. The game dice are presented as nets (2D plan) and are easily made up.

Cost: $30.00

Working with sentences

This resource focuses on the development of language, particularly at the sentence level. These activities are still set within the language framework of sounds - words - sentences - text. The sentence activities are not based specifically on grammar, as much as showing students the power and flexibility of sentence structure.

There are ten work units based around themes. Each lesson plan begins by establishing a vocabulary for the unit. Then a sentence 'main idea' is introduced with two or three activities to practise and demonstrate. Finally, vocabulary and sentences are used at the text level.

An example of a sentence main idea is that a sentence is structured to present ideas, opinions and facts.

If you are looking for a fun and effective resource for practising language skills,Tik Tak Talk is what you need. It consists of 34 game boards, all in a noughts and crosses configuration, and there are hundreds of possibilities for playing the games.

Take turns to play a game of noughts and crosses, but before you can claim a space on the board with your marker, you have to practice a language task. These language tasks represented on the game boards are :

1) Describe it! - describe the picture depicted on the board square,

2) Explain it! - explain how the picture depicted works, or how it is used,

3) What goes with ....? - think of things or verbs or adjectives that you would associate with the picture you chose,

4) In a sentence - use the picture/word in a sentence,

5) Same & different - talk about how the two things shown are the same or how they are different.

There are also three miscellaneous language tasks:

- Questions - the 'wh' question words are written in the spaces on the board, choose a single stimulus picture and ask questions, depending on the word / space you chose,
- Descriptors - descriptive features are written on the board (e.g. size, shape, colour), choose a single stimulus picture and describe it according to the feature written on the space you chose,
- Categories - category names are written on the board (e.g. food, transport), when you choose a space, list some items that belong to that category.

Tik Tak Talk is simple, fun, effective and highly motivating for practising these language skills.
