Speech therapy in cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction

Ginette Phippen and the Spires Cleft Centre SLT Team (Editors)

This is a practical and accessible handbook of evidence-based clinical practice for the assessment and management of speech disorders relating to cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). The book specifically draws on expert knowledge and practice with reference to research and current clinical procedure, and the accompanying CD provides many useful resources such as assessment frameworks and checklists, phonetics resources, treatment plans, and decision-making aids.

The book:

  • empowers community-based SLTs in their work with this client group, from assessment and differential diagnosis through to treatment
  • comprehensively links and applies theory to practice, with detailed case studies
  • makes the clinical decision-making process explicit at each stage of assessment and intervention
  • provides practical models and resources for working across all age ranges in clinics, preschools and schools
  • includes comments from patients, clients and carers, providing important feedback about the acceptability of service provision.
